What's new?
The first session of our Yachting School starts!
15 June 2010
Under the guidance of experienced tutors the children attended their first lessons in the art of sailing, were swimming, sunbathing and having fun with their peers.
The instructors of the Sailing Academy, which is situated on the Kyiv Sea, teach children to sail a two-hulled catamaran. As is the practice at school - theory precedes practise. On the fifth day, the last day of the course, there is an exam, and having passed it successfully, the children are awarded certificates of international standard.
The programme remains in force until the end of summer. Every Monday new groups start their work.
We met with the young sailors after the second day of lessons and asked about their impressions on sailing.
So, was it interesting today?
Nadiya (12 years old): It was very interesting, but the theory was a bit boring.
You were sitting at the desks and writing as in school?
Liza (13 years old): Yes, but it was in the open air. We had a meal and then we sat and wrote down the theory.
Nadiya: And then we were sailing a catamaran. That was really cool!
Did they let you steer?
Masha (13 years old): We steered ourselves!
Liza: Today we steered the catamaran ourselves and the instructor sat next to us and gave advice on what to do.
Nadiya: We sail in pairs – one person looks after ropes, another one steers. We swap on our way back. And in the end we shall pass an exam, too.
What was the most difficult part?
In chorus: Theory!
Was it not difficult to steer a catamaran? It requires a huge physical effort, doesn’t it?
Masha: No, it is not difficult at all!
Liza: Today, we met a small yacht on our way; its name was “Kadet”. A boy of eight years old was sitting there and managing it.
What is the highest speed for a yacht?
Nadiya: Well, it depends on the wind.
Liza: Today, we achieved a high speed. It was 3-4 balls according to the 12-ball system. It is a good speed. We moved at four reef knots an hour.
Masha: It’s pity that it wasn’t twelve.
Would you like to sail again tomorrow?
In chorus: Of course we would!
