A master class in oil painting by Edward Kulish

10 December 2011

Paint a picture in 3 hours! At first sight, this appears impossible. But the participants of Edward Kulish’s master class do not give up that easily! The goal has been set and now, step by step, from the simple to the complex…

“It is very interesting, close and important to me that a person gets not only the finished painting, but enjoy this creative process. When laying paints on the palette, you are creating a new world. After such an experiment, people look at the works of artists as well as at Art in general with different eyes. My master class is a kind of art popularization”. In such words the artist defines the global purpose of his master classes. Everybody may become a participant of this mystery (regardless of age or painting experience).

 Beginner painter’s guide

  1. Forget that you cannot do something, that the last time you did it was at school or that you have never done it. Imagine yourself as a painter for three hours.
  2. Choose a picture that is to your liking.
  3. Mix colours and paint with confidence. Do it as if you have been doing it for the whole your life. Do not try to do it as “I was taught this way”. Any touch made by you must be correct only for you.
  4. Paint over all marked lines and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Oil can be corrected easily. If you have difficulty painting with a brush, try to use your fingers, hands, pieces of paper or file.
  5. Enjoy the process: feel as each stroke of your brush turns you from an average person into a painter.
  6. Drawing the details, step away and look at your masterpiece from a distance. You will immediately see the missing details and those which need adding.
  7. Sign your beautiful work with dignity. And mark this date in your diary, writing in the margin “I was a painter that day!”
