Concert of British Music: “Introduction to the Orchestra”. Collegium Kyiv orchestra
22 October 2010To book a ticket
On Friday 22nd October at 7.00 p.m. the concert of British Classic Music “Introduction to the Orchestra” by the chamber orchestra “Collegium Kyiv” (conductor Paul Henry) will take place at the Culture and Education Centre Master Klass. On this day four plays by British composers will be
premiered in Ukraine.
Talented children – pupils of Kyiv Music Schools, students of the Glier Music College – are to take part in the event. The event organizers hope that the concert will attract the widest audience, from the young to the elderly, and so popularize chamber and orchestral music.
Entrance fee: 50 hryvnias.
Programme:
- Benjamin Britten: A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra
- Benjamin Britten: Soirees Musicales (Suite of Five Movements from Rossini)
- Interval
- Ralph Vaughan-Williams: Suite of English Folk Songs
- Henry Wood: Fantasia of British Sea Songs
The first act of the programme “A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra”, is a 1946 composition, a sort of a musical lecture about the orchestra’s work. While performing this composition, the host will recount about the various components of the orchestra, the instruments and the mutual interaction between the musicians. Such a visual lesson will be interesting to both professional musicians and general admirers of chamber music.
The last piece of music in the programme, “Fantasia of British Sea Songs”, is famous first of all, for being annually performed at the Last Night of the Promenade Concerts. The Proms are the most popular British Festival of Classic Music, having been held for over a hundred years at the Albert Hall in London. Annually, during the Last Night of the Proms the overcrowded hall is filled with a very “un-classical music” atmosphere - almost like a students’ party. The audience, many of whom are young people, accompany the musicians with their pipes, wave the flags of the United Kingdom and express positive emotions in every way. The organizers of the Kyiv concert promise to do everything so that the Ukrainian public can experience the same atmosphere.
“Introduction to the Orchestra” will be a resumption of the series of concerts “Three Hundred Years of British Music”, initiated by Master Klass in October 2009. A Scot and professor of Oxford University, Frank McGovern, is the inspiration behind and initiator of the series. At these concerts the audience will have the opportunity to become familiar with the classic works of the “Foggy Albion” by composers such as Henry Purcell, William Boyce, Edward Elgar, Michael Tippet and others. Some of these pieces of music are so unique that this will be a premiere not only for Ukraine, but for all the countries in the CIS.
